Talk to a pharmacist — find your location and call directly
Medicare information

Prepare for a more useful Medicare prescription conversation.

Coverage questions are easier to discuss when your plan information and medication list are in one place. Use this guide before calling your plan, Medicare, a licensed advisor or your pharmacy.

Medicare prescription coverage can differ by plan, pharmacy, medication and year. Elite Pharmacy cannot choose a plan for you, but your pharmacy team can help you gather useful prescription information and identify questions for the organization that makes the coverage decision.

Start with four things

Your current plan card

Use the phone number and member information printed on the card.

A complete medication list

Include names, strengths and how often you use each medicine when known.

Your preferred pharmacy

Know which Elite location you use or would like to use.

Your specific questions

Write them down so you can record each answer and who provided it.

Questions worth asking

  • Is my preferred Elite Pharmacy location in the plan's network?
  • Is each medication on the plan's formulary, or covered-drug list?
  • Does the medication have a deductible, copay or coinsurance?
  • Are there quantity limits, prior-authorization rules or step-therapy requirements?
  • Would the cost change for a different supply length?
  • Who should my prescriber or pharmacy contact if more information is needed?

Know who makes each decision

Your Medicare plan determines network status, formulary coverage and member costs. Medicare and licensed advisors can explain enrollment choices. Prescribers make clinical treatment decisions. Your pharmacy can provide prescription details, process claims and explain the information returned by a plan at that time.

Before ending the conversation

Repeat back the answer, note the date and save any reference number. Coverage and pricing information can change, so ask when the information applies and whether another step is required.

A helpful reminder

Do not stop or change a medication because of a coverage question without speaking with the person who prescribed it. If cost or access is a concern, contact your pharmacy and prescriber early enough to discuss the available next steps.
